The Shins Mesa Concert reviews
Never again
"I've been a fan of The Shins' TV broadcasts for years and was very excited to finally have the opportunity to see him in person. And I need to add that not even the entire show was a performance - several minutes of the show was dedicated to a video replay of an escape trick he had done for television.
There really was no illusion to this show at all. He was dressed like he had just gotten up on a Saturday morning to run over to the local coffee joint for a quick cup while he reads the paper. Yes, I understand that he has done this probably thousands of times, but I didn't pay to see him do a show by rote; I paid to see "magic", to be transported into that amazing universe that he lives in when he puts together one of his television specials. All the tricks he did worked and were amazing, but that's all they were - tricks.
I know this sounds really trite, but the most accurate statement I can make about the show is to say that there was just no magic in the performance. Although I enjoyed seeing the tricks (and yes, they were amazing) his seemingly bored presentation really brought down what could otherwise have been a stunningly great performance. He went through the entire show in a hurry and seemed to be bored by the entire process. As sad as it is for me to say this, I don't recommend this show.
There was no sense of illusion or magic about any of it. I can see similar tricks performed by many other magicians that are much more entertaining."
